February 2012

Described as "magnificent" by the Boston Globe, baritone Daniel Cilli has garnered praise for his "cultivated, sonorous vocalism" and "strong, beautiful, impeccably produced voice" (Opera News). The San Francisco Chronicle hailed the "robust baritone" as "vivid and charismatic".

Since performing as a principal baritone 2006-2010 at Opera San José, Mr. Cilli’s repertoire has expanded to over thirty opera roles including the title roles in Eugene Onegin and Il barbiere di Siviglia, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Mercutio in Roméo et Juliette, Dandini in La Cenerentola, Belcore in L’Elisir d’amore, and Albert in Werther, and in April 2011 Schaunard in La bohème. Earlier in the year he joined the Baltimore Symphony as Papageno in a semi-staged production of Magic Flute under Marin Alsop.

Mr. Cilli has performed with Des Moines Metro Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Central City Opera, Utah Opera, San Francisco Lyric Opera, West Bay Opera and Amarillo Opera. Some highlight roles for Daniel Cilli include Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sid in Albert Herring, Lescaut in Manon Lescaut, Schaunard in La bohème, and Painter Monk in Le Jongleur de Notre Dame.

At the Aspen Music Festival 2005 Mr. Cilli was a soloist in the Beethoven Choral Fantasy as part of David Zinman’s birthday celebration concert, and performed the roles of Legal Counsel in Intermezzo and Rasputin in Wachsfigurenkabinett. The baritone has pursued a diverse fascination with concert song with the Utah Symphony, San Juan Symphony, South Valley Symphony, Aspen Music Festival, and Tanglewood Music Festival, and as a guest at Lawrence University. As a recitalist on stage at the Old First Church, the San Francisco Classical Voice said- "Cilli's sense of style... lent a sense of security to the performance that glued your attention to the richness of Schumann’s remarkable score (Dichterliebe). Cilli possesses an exceptionally burnished, umber depth of timbre."

A recent Studio Artist at the Houston Grand Opera, Daniel Cilli was involved in four productions including two world premieres: performing in Mark Adamo’s Lysistrata and covering the role of Chucho in Daniel Catan’s Salsipuedes. As a young artist at Utah Opera, Mr Cilli’s roles included Jake Wallace in La fanciulla del West, Nireno in Giulio Cesare, Malatesta in a tour of Don Pasquale. As an apprentice at Central City Opera 2004, Daniel Cilli was presented the John Moriarty Award in addition to performing roles in all four productions of the season. Cilli holds vocal performance degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music and Stetson University, and has studied Lieder at the Franz Schubert Institute of Baden bei Wien, Austria.
