Baldur Brönnimann, conductor

Biography

Baldur Brönnimann was born in Switzerland and studied at the Basel Music Academy where he participated in masterclasses with György Kurtag and Witold Lutoslawski, amongst others. In 1993 he won the Swiss Young Conductors' Competition and in 1996 he was appointed Junior Fellow in Conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music. In this role, he assisted many international conductors, including Kent Nagano and Sir Edward Downes, directed acclaimed performances of "La Boheme" and "Werther" as part of the RNCM opera season, and premiered the revised version of Berg's Chamber Concerto. He was recently appointed Visiting Tutor in Conducting at the RNCM where he will direct a staged performance of Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms this season.

In 1998 Brönnimann was appointed Young Conductor in Association with the Northern Sinfonia (UK). In this role he conducted the orchestra in numerous concerts, collaborated with leading international soloists including Evelyn Glennie and Tasmin Little, and premiered several works by major British composers, such as Nicola LeFanu's Double Concerto in 2000. He also appeared at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Brinkburn and Ryedale Festivals and recorded for BBC radio and television. With the Northern Sinfonia's youth orchestra, Young Sinfonia, Brönnimann won the prestigious Sainsbury Award, and conducted them in performances at the Edinburgh Festival as well as in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland and Poland.

In 2001 Brönnimann conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra with Joanna McGregor as soloist on a highly acclaimed tour of Ireland. In the same year he also gave his debut performance with the Halle Orchestra in Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.

Following his successful collaboration with the Northern Sinfonia, Brönnimann is now invited back on a regular basis and will perform with them at the UK’s Bath Festival later this year. This season he will also return to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Halle Orchestra, and will make his debut with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Last month he stepped in at the last-minute to conduct the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in a highly successful performance of Ravel, Saint-Saens and Barber, and in December he made his German debut with the Thuringia Philharmonic. In May, he will make his Swiss debut with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra.
