Thierry Fischer, conductor
Short Biography
Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Ulster Orchestra from September 2001, the Swiss conductor Thierry Fischer was born in 1957 and studied flute with Aurèle Nicolet. Whilst Principal Flute of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe he was given the opportunity to conduct the orchestra, with the result that, encouraged by Abbado and Harnoncourt, he has dedicated himself entirely to conducting since 1992.
Since then he has appeared with, among others: NDR Hamburg, Ensemble Modern, Norwegian Opera, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Lausanne Chamber, Orchestre National de Lyon, Capitole de Toulouse, Australian Chamber, Kanazawa Chamber, BBC Symphony and BBC Scottish Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Hallé Orchestra, Dutch Radio Symphony and Chamber orchestras, with forthcoming engagements in Copenhagen, Montpellier, with the Swedish Radio Symphony, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Bournemouth Symphony. He also spent several years as Principal Conductor of the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra and has conducted at the Nationale Reisoper in Holland.
Fischer toured to New York and Europe in his first season with the Ulster Orchestra, and together they are recording a French repertoire series for Hyperion. His disc for Deutsche Grammophon conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe playing works by Frank Martin was nominated for a Gramophone Award. Fischer has also made recordings for several other companies, including ASV and Chandos Records, and in September 2001 he recorded a disc with the NDR Hannover for Edel Classics.
