Short Biography

Louis Lortie was born in Montreal, but now lives in Europe. His teachers have included Yvonne Hubert (a pupil of Alfred Cortot) in Montreal, Beethoven specialist Dieter Weber in Vienna, and Leon Fleisher (a disciple of Schnabel and a specialist in the German/Viennese repertoire) in the USA.

In 1984 he was a prizewinner at the Leeds International Piano Competition, and was also unanimously awarded first prize at the Busoni competition in Italy. Since then he has performed with many of the world’s top orchestras. Highlights this season and next include the Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, and La Scala Milan.

He has released some twenty recordings, many of which have won international awards. His most recent releases on Chandos include all the works for piano and orchestra by Liszt with the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague/Pehlivanian, the Franck Symphonic Variations with the BBC Philharmonic/Tortelier, and the Beethoven sonatas.
