Varga adds festival directorship to his many talents
In increasing demand with the world's orchestras, Gilbert Varga has just completed his first year as Artistic Director of the Tibor Varga Festival in Sion, Switzerland.

He continues to be Principal Guest conductor of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and opened their season in Malmö in September before touring the programme, which includes trumpet concertos by Sandstrom and Part (Hardenberger) and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, to Estonia and Latvia. In October he had concerts with the Bamberg Symphony, with whom he is recording Bruch violin concertos with Isabelle van Keulen for Koch International.

Much in demand in Germany, he conducts the Kölner Rundfunk Sinfonie Orchester in January. Earlier this year, his successful concerts with the Bayerische Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra led to an immediate re-invitation for 2000. He will also return to the Hallé Orchestra and Rotterdam Philharmonic - both for the fifth time. Inevitably re-invited wherever he conducts, Varga has just been back to the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo and is returning more and more to the United States and Canada in the future.
