FAN MAIL
Lara receives a lot of fan mail. Here we feature occasionally a noteworthy letter.

JANUARY 6, 2001

Lara,

Last night we had the privilege of hearing and seeing your performance at Princeton University with the New Jersey Symphony. Since we had front row seats, we were able to see up close some of your intensity and your passion for the music. But what made the experience really a pleasure was sensing that you really enjoy what you do.

Your comments on the criticism about your CD cover were well put. I enjoy many types of music, but I am not well versed at all in classical music. When I'm browsing through the classical music section at the store, I must admit I have no way usually to differentiate one CD from another. The cover on your Bach CD basically says, here is a different approach to classical music; why not give it a try? I did and I found the experience pleasurable and fun. Someday I hope my kids, who are both in their twenties, are drawn to classical music. I think it may take an innovator like yourself who is passionate about what she does to do it. Keep it up and don't let anyone take you where you don't want to go.

Geoff

Lara's thoughts on the plight of Canadian orchestras

"Although I may not be exeedingly politically minded, it seems to me as though there might exist a reasonably simple solution to the financial quagmire many Canadian orchestras are plopping around in these days..."

Buy Lara's Bach Concertos CD online
"This recording of the concertos is in a class by itself. I can't even think of a recording that I would name as second best to this one. Those who have not yet acquainted themselves with St. John's exceptional artistry would do well to hear this." (Joseph Magil, American Record Guide, May 2002)

Lara's long-awaited Bach Concertos CD is on the market and is making a splash! Writes Gramophone: "She has a sleek and silvery tone, favours fleet tempos, and applies vibrato judiciously. The effect in these Bach concertos is reminiscent of Kennedy’s recording with the Berlin Philharmonic yet considerably more stylish and satisfying." You can listen to the tracks and buy it directly on this website.

Lara's successful Cincinnati Symphony debut
"Ms. St. John handled virtuosic passages with spark and assurance, but never did she milk the concerto for effect. All was stirred together with elegance and self control, earning the tall, blonde violinist well deserved "bravas" at the end.

Lara's a hit with the Toronto Symphony
"For her part, St. John swept through Sarasate's fiendish Zigeunerweisen like fire through prairie grass, rendering the sinuous sensuality and dancing frenzy of its gypsy moods with equal aplomb." Toronto Star
